What Is Hyaluronic Acid

You’ve probably seen hyaluronic acid (HA) in different skin care products. Over the past couple of years, we have learned how important HA is for a radiant complexion. As a naturally-occurring molecule in the human body, HA plays a vital role in your skin’s health and hydration. After all, your skin reserves half of your body’s supply of HA.[1] HA is a hygroscopic molecule, meaning it can hold one-thousand times its weight in water. This characteristic is what keeps the skin’s interior structures well-hydrated. When collagen and elastin fibers are well-hydrated, your skin retains its youthful glow and wrinkle-free appearance.

What Does Juvéderm Treat

Inside every Juvéderm filler is an activated form of HA. As a gel-like substance, these fillers vary in viscosities so that they can treat a wide range of cosmetic concerns. The viscosities vary because not all signs of aging can be treated the same. Some more superficial concerns only need a less viscous solution, while deeper lines and volume loss requires a thicker and stiffer gel. There are three aesthetic issues the Juvéderm family of fillers treat:

Wrinkles & Fine Lines

Along with HA, you’ve probably seen collagen in many different skin care products. Like HA, your skin uses a majority of your body’s collagen supply to keep your appearance young and blemish-free. Collagen fibers are tensile ropes that reach from the top to the bottom of your dermis. When we’re young, these fibers are tight and strong. Freshly produced collagen molecules repair damages in the fibers and a healthy supply of HA keeps these fibers hydrated. These fibers keep your skin smooth and wrinkle-free. But as you get older, your body produces fewer collagen molecules. So, your aging collagen fibers are left unsupported. This is when wrinkles and fine lines gradually make their debut. By 50, your skin has lost approximately 30% of its natural collagen supply.[2]

Volume Loss

Along with wrinkles and fine lines, volume loss can make your face appear older and more mature. Subcutaneous facial fat is held in place by tight skin. These fat pads keep your bones and soft tissue protected, while also keeping your face from looking skeletal. Over time, this fat begins to atrophy, and gravity pulls the depleted fat pads lower on the face.[3] So, areas like your under-eyes and cheeks lose their fullness and contours over time.

Under-defined Features

The size and prominence of your facial features are determined solely by your genetics. Many turn to Juvéderm to plump their lips, contour cheekbones, and create a prominent jawline. Because these products range in viscosities, they can build the necessary volume to emphasize the desired features.

What Juvéderm Filler is Right for Me?

We all age differently. Because we have the full line of Juvéderm formulas, we can treat more than one cosmetic concern during your in-office treatment. The Juvéderm fillers you can choose from or opt to combine the benefits of are:

Volbella

Wrinkles around our mouth and thin lips are common concerns that can strike people at any age. Volbella is designed to smooth away creases and plump the lips.

Vollure

Nasolabial folds stretch from the bottom of your nostrils to the sides or your mouth, or even extend to each side of your chin. These wrinkles become more pronounced with age and can develop into moderate to severe folds. Vollure is a thicker filler that corrects deeper wrinkles like nasolabial folds and achieves a younger, more radiant appearance.

Ultra

With age, you might notice little vertical lines on your upper lip. The Ultra formula is designed to smooth these specific lines and creases away. Volbella also gives lips more definition and dimension.

Ultra+

Ultra+ is thicker and holds its shape better than the other Juvéderm fillers. It is remarkable at filling in marionette lines, volume loss in the cheeks, and sunken corners of the mouth. Ultra+ can also provide a boost to other areas that suffer from volume loss. During your consultation, we will note which ones are best for your desired results. What Are The Benefits?

Some other procedures and services rejuvenate your face’s appearance. While they may offer similar results, these alternatives don’t come with the added benefits of a Juvéderm procedure.

Non-Surgical

Procedures like a facelift or brow lift are perfect for those who want to look younger. But, because these are surgical operations, you have to meet certain health requirements, follow specific preparations, and plan for significant downtime. Juvéderm fillers, on the other hand, are just simple injections that take roughly 30 minutes to complete. Right after these in-office procedures, you are free to resume your daily routine without having to worry about a lengthy recovery.

Quick Results

Unlike other cosmetic injections, Juvéderm produces results almost instantly. The solution is injected directly into the skin. The viscosity of the gel builds out immediate volume while the HA molecules gradually bind with water in the skin to support the skin’s structure and keep it hydrated, allowing for a renewal of collagen production.[4]

Personal Consultation

If this is your first time at Wunderbar, we’ll begin with a new patient interview and ask you about your desired aesthetic results. Many patients come to us with more than one treatable condition. So, we may recommend other procedures, services, or treatments. All of this will help determine your personalized treatment plan. We’ll walk you through what to do before and after your treatment to ensure the best results.

Prepare For Juvéderm

Before your session, it’s important to:

  • Stop taking blood-thinning medications. If you are prescribed a blood thinner, speak with your healthcare provider before doing so.
  • Stop using nicotine products. Nicotine restricts your blood vessels which disrupts your body’s natural healing process.
  • Avoid alcohol as recent consumption can cause unwanted bruising in the treated areas.

A Juvéderm Session

At the start of your session, we’ll begin by sanitizing the target area. Then, we’ll inject the solution into the designated area. After we inject the filler into your skin, we will massage it so that your results are even and spread out appropriately.

After Care

When you leave our care, you’ll see a noticeable difference and be able to start enjoying your results. Afterwards, the treated area(s) may be a little tender. We recommend using an ice pack and Tylenol to relieve any swelling and discomfort. Your results will continue to improve as the HA solution incites collagen production. Most Juvéderm fillers last up to 18 months.

Juvéderm vs. Botox

Another popular cosmetic treatment for wrinkles is Botox. Since its FDA approval in 1989, Botox has become a household name. Botox shares Juvéderm’s non-surgical simplicity and wrinkle-free results, but it uses different ingredients. Botox contains botulinum toxin, a neuromodulator that paralyzes the underlying facial muscles causing wrinkles, leaving a smooth, youthful appearance. Unlike Juvéderm, Botox is injected into the muscle. Also, while Juvéderm is equipped to restore volume loss, Botox is mainly used for fine lines and wrinkles. Be sure to ask how Botox can complement your Juvéderm treatment.

How Much Does Juvéderm Cost on The Central Coast?

The cost of your Juvéderm treatment will depend on the extent of your personalized treatment plan. We will discuss and determine the cost of your care during your consultation. If you have any questions about the price of Juvéderm, please contact us or call us at (650) 254-1200 (Mountain View); (408) 831-6229 (San Jose); or (831) 656-9331 (Carmel-by-the-Sea) for an initial consultation.
