About Collagen
Collagen is a protein found in our muscles, bones, and tendons. But most of it is found beneath our skin, where it forms a supportive structure that keeps our skin firm and elastic. These proteins form fibers that are interwoven to form the connective tissue that anchors our skin to the underlying tissues. Unfortunately, as time progresses, this support structure begins to weaken as our body produces less and less collagen. After our early adulthood, collagen production declines by 1-1½% each year.[1] That means that if you’re 50, you’ve lost nearly a third of the collagen in your skin. As a direct result, unwanted wrinkles, lines, and loose skin begin to appear. There’s no shortage of lotions and serums that promise anti-aging magic, but they simply can’t go deep enough to be effective. How Does Morpheus8 Work?
Morpheus8 delivers fresh, supple skin in just a few short sessions. During a treatment, your technician applies the Morpheus8 device to the skin. The handpiece contains 24 extremely fine needles that are inserted into the skin at controlled measurements in order to reach the optimal depth for the treatment area. That’s because some areas of skin are thicker than others. These needles have an insulated coating except for the tips, so once they reach the dermis, the RF energy is emitted where it matters most! Morpheus8 heats the dermis up to 122°F, which isn’t enough to cause a burn, but is just enough heat to get things moving. This quick blast of heat causes the existing collagen fibers beneath the skin to contract and thicken, tightening the skin. It also stimulates the production of new collagen, elastin, and blood vessels. In the meantime, the body registers the needle punctures as an injury, and an inflammatory response occurs. Preparing for Morpheus8 Treatment
Considering the minimally-invasive nature of this procedure, patients will only need to do a few things to prepare for the first session. They include the following.
- Abstaining from alcohol the day before and after treatment
- Avoiding excessive sun exposure and wearing high SPF sunscreen to shield your skin
- Refraining from taking certain blood-thinning pain relievers and supplements the week before your appointment
- Avoiding skin treatments containing retinol or chemical exfoliants 48 hours prior
Procedure
At the start of your treatment, we will apply a topical numbing agent in the treatment areas to prevent any discomfort. Once it takes effect, the Morpheus8 handpiece will be placed on the surface of your skin. When the device is activated, the microneedles inside the device will gently penetrate the layers of the skin. At the same time, the tips of the microneedles will heat underlying tissues to encourage collagen and elastin production to start skin remodeling. [2] The needles’ depth will be adjusted throughout the session based on your unique needs, your comfort level, and the area being treated. We will repeat the applications of the device to your skin, ensuring that the entire treatment area receives even coverage.
Recovery
Unlike other skin treatments, Morpheus8 allows patients to resume their normal activities once their session ends. Therefore, there is no significant downtime or recuperating necessary. There will be, however, slight post-treatment symptoms of redness, irritation, and swelling for 1-3 days. [2] Plan to protect your skin with high SPF sunscreen and use caution when applying cosmetics or going out in the sun until your skin completely heals.
