A laser resurfacing treatment is one of the most effective ways to smooth and revitalize your skin. Patients choose laser procedures to address age spots, redness, and fine lines and wrinkles, as well as stimulating the deeper layers of skin to produce more healthy skin structural components like collagen. Ablative lasers cause controlled injury to the epidermis, while non-ablative, or partially ablative lasers treat the deeper layers of the dermis, without damaging the surface of the skin. There are many different energy-based systems available at varied wavelengths, including intense pulsed light (IPL), hybrid fractional laser, and the picosecond laser. This makes laser treatments incredibly versatile and customizable for individual patients’ needs.

Skin varies in tone, texture, and condition. And, as we age, we may notice a decline in its overall health. Tissue laxity can cause sagging, lines can appear more prominent, and we may notice our skin has become less even-toned in certain places. Blemishes, redness and dark patches are also common for both men and women. With a laser skin procedure, patients can take advantage of safe, in-office treatments that can improve your skin’s vitality from within as well and clear away common problems on its surface.

Laser Skin Resurfacing: Safe, Tailored Treatments

Lasers have many applications in aesthetic treatments, and have been used in skin resurfacing procedures since the early 1980s. They work on and below the surface of the skin, with gentler, non-ablative lasers becoming available and more popular in recent years. In fact, many patients prefer laser treatments over more aggressive treatments such as chemical peels.(1)

Compared to ablative lasers, nonablative fractional devices have minimal side effects and shortened downtime. However, different modalities are required according to the area and severity of your skin ailment. Less severe blemishes and surface redness can be addressed with wavelengths that only alter the top layers of the skin, while deeper scars and skin pigmentation issues can be targeted with more intense treatment. Many cosmetic laser systems have numerous specialized attachments for specific skin resurfacing requirements, so you can get a tailored treatment that fits your aesthetic aspirations.

Nordlys Laser System

Nordlys is a multi-functional infrared laser system with over twenty indications for use. It has four unique technologies to help you look and feel your best, most radiant self! Each of its modalities is designed to target specific skin issues safely and effectively. Check the extensive treatment options below for more information about Nordlys skin resurfacing services at Wunderbar.

Ellipse IPL

The Ellipse handpiece delivers powerful pulsed light energy to treat a number of skin conditions. It can treat diffuse redness, improve pigmentation problems, and even remove unwanted hair without the application of laser wavelengths. Ellipse IPL technology can also reduce the appearance of vascular irregularities on the surface of the skin such as prominent leg veins and broken capillaries. The duration and intensity of the individual pulses produced by the device are targeted, allowing for controlled energy delivery into tissue.(2)

Frax 1550

Along with its counterpart, Frax 1940, Frax 1550 fractional laser technology delivers light energy in small, controlled bursts. It has three key uses in skin rejuvenation;

  • Smooths textural irregularities
  • Improves the appearance of sun-damaged skin
  • Improves overall skin texture

The non-ablative Frax 1550 handpiece is suitable for more superficial blemishes and minor acne scars, as it’s used at shallower tissue depths.

Frax 1940

Frax 1940 is another non-ablative fractional skin resurfacing option. Its focused energy wavelengths penetrate through the epidermis to the deeper dermal levels (up to 200 μm deep). This allows it to treat more pronounced textural issues and sun damage. Like the Frax 1550, the Frax 1940 uses SoftCool for your comfort during treatment.

ND:YAG 1064

Research shows Nd:YAG lasers are a good choice for patients with darker skin because the longer wavelengths emitted work more effectively. (3) Nd:YAG stands for neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet; a crystal that is used to deliver powerful laser energy. The ND:YAG 1064 attachment can address a number of irregularities such as:

  • Vascular Lesions
  • Venous Lakes
  • Port Wine Stains
  • Warts
  • Facial Redness.

Frax 1550, Frax 1940 and ND:YAG 1064 all employ SoftCool technology, a special cooling feature that makes treatment more comfortable.

Sciton Joule Laser System

The Sciton Joule is a highly customizable, award-winning hybrid fractional laser system for skin rejuvenation, hair removal, and vascular lesion treatment. With a large selection of handpieces, this laser system can treat scarring, lesions, and wrinkles, as well as perform more involved treatments such as vein removal, HD lipo sculpting, and laser lipolysis. Its world-class OptiPlex platform accommodates three individual delivery modes: arm, fiber, and broadband light.

Joule Treatment Delivery Modes

  • ClearScan ALX -ClearScan ALX is a red light laser that provides maximum comfort and fast treatment times. Using alexandrite crystal laser technology, ClearScan ALX provides superior patient comfort and effective results
  • ClearScan YAG – This 1064 nm Nd:YAG permanently removes hair and reduces vascular lesions. It’s a particularly effective treatment for facial veins, reticular leg veins, and other vascular irregularities.
  • ProFractional – The ProFractional erbium:YAG laser has high ablation efficiency. It resurfaces the target area while leaving surrounding skin intact, promoting rapid recovery. Improving the overall quality of the skin, ProFractional allows patients drastically reduced downtime and a solution to texture issues, wrinkles, and acne scars.

Controlled thermal injury from fractional lasers is proven to significantly improve the appearance of skin.(4)

PicoWay

PicoWay is a state-of-the-art split beam picosecond laser. Its advanced pulses can treat blemishes, scars, dark spots, wrinkles, and even tattoos! The PicoWay system delivers stable light at three wavelengths – 532nm, 785nm, and 1064nm with two handpiece options, Resolve or Zoom, depending on the focus of the treatment.

Resolve Handpiece

The Resolve attachment allows deeper penetration into tissue. It splits the laser energy into one hundred tiny identical microbeams. These beams distribute equally to provide even treatment for acne scars, pigmented lesions, and wrinkles. By creating a controlled injury at the skin’s surface, the PicoWay laser stimulates natural tissue healing and the new production of collagen and elastin.

Zoom Handpiece

Primarily for pigmentation issues, the Zoom handpiece can deliver short high energy pulses to remove dark spots and even out skin tone. The top layer of skin is vaporized and pigmented cells are shattered, correcting freckles, birthmarks, liver spots, and pimple marks. Once this pigment has been destroyed, the body gradually and naturally eliminates it, leaving you with clearer, brighter skin.

Independent research shows picosecond lasers are safe and effective for the removal of decorative tattoos, with an average 92% clearance of black ink after multiple sessions.(5)

FAQ

What’s the best laser treatment for dark spots?

There are a number of highly effective laser treatments for dark spots. These include fractional lasers, picosecond lasers, and ND:YAG systems. Book an appointment with a skin rejuvenation specialist to discover the most effective treatment modality for you.

Is a laser skin resurfacing procedure painful?

Laser skin resurfacing treatments are in-office, outpatient procedures that are usually comfortable enough for patients to leave immediately afterwards. Depending on the nature of your treatment, laser resurfacing can feel like a rubber band snapping against your skin, or a heating sensation, which is tolerable for most people.

How many laser sessions do I need to remove older scars?

In some cases, multiple laser resurfacing treatments are required for the best results. Your skin type, the severity of the scar, and the age of the scar are all factors, so be sure to discuss the estimated number of sessions you’ll need to get the results you want with your provider.
