Radiesse is a dermal filler that’s commonly used for the correction of moderate to severe wrinkles and lines and can also be used to improve age-related changes in the hands. It’s the only FDA-approved hand volume loss correction treatment, and it’s suitable for patients who have noticed a decline in the appearance of their hands over time.

For some people, their age is betrayed by deepening facial wrinkles and folds. However, depending on your genetics and the environment you live in, your hands could be the features that give your age away. Thinning skin on the hands means that veins, tendons, and underlying bones are more noticeable. There’s also a decline in fatty tissue that can make our hands look less youthful. That’s why increasing numbers of people are choosing Radiesse to achieve more youthful looking hands.

Dr. Joshua Korman’s Wunderbar is a med spa with a difference. Before and After Photos

How Our Hands Change Over Time

Our hands take on a more wizened appearance as we grow older. This is due to a number of internal (intrinsic) and external (extrinsic) factors. UV exposure, chemicals, and smoking are all significant reasons why the surface of our skin changes over time, and intrinsic tissue changes can also happen in the deeper levels of the skin.(1) Age-related aesthetic problems in the hands can include:

  •  Thinning Skin
  • Fatty Tissue Loss
  • Skin Translucency
  • Liver Spots (Solar Lentigines)
  • Easy Bruising (Purpura Senilis)
  • Rough Skin Texture (Actinic Keratosis)
  • Reduced Skin Elasticity
  • Tendon and Vein Visibility

Over the years, more and more cosmetic treatments have become available for the face, especially in-office, non-surgical procedures like injectable neuromodulators such as Botox, and dermal fillers like Restylane. However, Radiesse is one of the only treatments that can be used on the backs of the hands. Patients now have the option to rejuvenate their hands using the same science as facial rejuvenation!

Benefits of Radiesse

The active ingredient in Radiesse is a substance known as calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA). Put simply, it’s a compound containing calcium and phosphates, both of which occur naturally in the body. Research shows that CaHA is a well-established collagen stimulator. And collagen is one of the key structural agents that keeps our skin strong and supple. That’s why Radiesse is such an effective volumizing filler that both improves skin quality and increases firmness.(2)

As well as being a proven treatment that enhances collagen production, Radiesse is an attractive choice for many patients because the procedure itself is so straightforward. It’s a simple injection that takes little time to administer, and causes minimal discomfort. It results in smoother skin with boosted volume that lasts for up to two years!

Candidates for Radiesse

Radiesse may be a good treatment for candidates looking to improve the appearance of their hands with a cosmetic injectable treatment. You may not be able to receive Radiesse injections if:

  • You’ve had a very strong allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
  • You’ve experienced multiple allergic reactions in the past.
  • You have a bleeding disorder
  • You’re hypersensitive or allergic to lidocaine
  • If you have skin inflammation or infection in the area of treatment, you must wait until it has resolved fully before getting Radiesse treatment.

Ideal candidates for hand rejuvenation with Radiesse are between the ages of 35-60.

Personal Consultation

At Wunderbar, we offer free initial consultations for prospective patients who are interested in Radiesse. Before we schedule your treatment, we’ll ask you to fill out our intake forms to help us get to know you and your medical history. After this, we will invite you to share your concerns with us, and take a look at the skin’s texture and appearance  to see the features you wish to improve. The Merz Scale is used by clinicians to assess the skin’s aging progression.

Merz Hand Grading Scale

  • Grade 0: No fatty tissue loss
  • Grade 1: Mild fatty tissue loss, some veins visible
  • Grade 2: Moderate fatty tissue loss, some veins visible
  • Grade 3: Severe fatty tissue loss, moderate vein visible
  • Grade 4: Very severe fatty tissue loss, marked vein and tendon visibility

At Wunderbar, we’ll ensure we choose the right procedure for your needs. And, if you’re a good candidate for Radiesse, we’ll schedule your treatment.

Preparation

Preparing for Radiesse hand rejuvenation is incredibly simple. Before your procedure, we ask that you do the following:

  • Avoid taking blood thinning medication (such as Warfarin).
  • Avoid taking other medications that thin the blood such as aspirin and other NSAIDs.
  • Tell us if you’re prone to scarring, especially raised scars (keloids).
  • Tell us if you have any hand mobility issues or injuries.

Hand Rejuvenation Procedure

Radiesse treatment is quick and straightforward. We’ll ask you to sit comfortably while we prepare the syringe. We’ll then thoroughly cleanse your hands to ensure the area is sterile. The amount of Radiesse used is based on the severity of the age-related change in the hands. After injection, it instantly plumps the area and starts to stimulate new collagen production. In as little as 15 minutes, your Radiesse treatment will be over, and you can leave immediately afterwards!

Results

In the initial days after your treatment, you may experience some temporary itching, swelling and bruising at the injection sites. Most patients describe only mild discomfort. Radiesse is an incredibly fast-acting filler, so you will see some changes immediately after your treatment. However, you should see the final results after 7-10 days. Your newly rejuvenated hands will look great thanks to Radiesse up to a year from your procedure.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Restylane Lyft

As an alternative to Radiesse, we also offer Restylane Lyft. Unlike Radiesse, it’s a hyaluronic acid filler. However, like Radiesse it’s perfectly formulated for hand rejuvenation! Patients can restore lost tissue volume and recreate the youthful softness and fullness of the skin on the back of the hands. Speak to us and we’ll help you decide which treatment will be most beneficial for your needs!

Fat Injection

Fat injection may be another option to improve age-related tissue changes in the hands. Autologous fat, or fat from a patient’s own body can be harvested from another area of the body, prepared, then reintroduced to the hands to increase tissue volume. Fat transfer can improve the appearance of the hands and reduce the prominence of veins and tendons. And, it may be a better option for long-term results. On average, fat transfer to the hands lasts between 3-5 years!

FAQ

What’s the best hand rejuvenation treatment?

It depends on your personal preference, and what treatments are available in your area. What may be a good match for one person may not fit another person’s requirements. Radiesse and Restylane Lyft are both safe, fast in-office treatments that can improve the appearance of common age-related skin problems in the hands such as loss of tissue volume, dark spots, and visible tendons and veins. Each filler contains different ingredients, so speak to a trained injectable specialist to find out which treatment suits your needs the most.

Is a Radiesse procedure painful?

Most patients describe Radiesse injections as a brief pinch. Although everyone responds differently to treatment, discomfort from Radiesse is generally classified as mild. After treatment, patients may experience temporary redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site, however, this will resolve in the first 1-2 weeks following treatment.

Does Radiesse contain lidocaine?

Radiesse preparations are available with or without lidocaine numbing. Speak to your provider about the formulations they have available for your hand rejuvenation procedure.
